When you try to start a worker process (W3wp.exe) in
Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0, you may receive a message
that is similar to the following in the Application log in Event
Viewer:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: W3SVC-WP
Event Category: None
Event ID: 2269
User: N/A
Computer: ServerName
Description: The worker process failed to initialize the
http.sys communication or the w3svc communication layer
and therefore could not be started. The data field contains
the error number.
The error number in the data field is 0000:
80070057.
You may also receive an error message that is
similar to the following when you try to view a Web page:
This issue can occur if the following conditions are true:
- The worker process is configured to use an identity that is different from Local System.
- The Everyone group and the User group do not have the Bypass
Traverse Checking user right. By default, the Everyone group and the User group have
this user right.
To resolve this issue, restore the Bypass Traverse Checking
user right for the Everyone group and the User group. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run,
type gpedit.msc, and then click
OK.
- Expand Computer Configuration, expand
Windows Settings, expand Security Settings,
expand Local Policies, and then expand User Rights
Assignment.
- Right-click Bypass traverse checking, and
then click Properties.
- Click Add User or Group.
- Type Users;Everyone, and then click
OK.
Note If you receive a message that an object named "Users" cannot be
found, click Object Types, click to select the
Groups check box, and then click OK two
times. - Start the worker process in IIS.
If you do not want to give the Everyone group and the User group the
Bypass Traverse Checking user right, you may be able to resolve this issue if
you give the IIS_WPG group the Bypass Traverse Checking user right. To do this,
follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run,
type gpedit.msc, and then click
OK.
- Expand Computer Configuration, expand
Windows Settings, expand Security Settings,
expand Local Policies, and then expand User Rights
Assignment.
- Right-click Bypass traverse checking, and
then click Properties.
- Click Add User or Group.
- Type IIS_WPG, and then click
OK.
Note If you receive a message that an object named "IIS_WPG" cannot be
found, click Object Types, click to select the
Groups check box, and then click OK two
times. - Start the worker process in IIS.
