Error message when you try connect to an IIS 6 Web site after you import a certificate: "The page cannot be displayed" or "Cannot find server or DNS Error"

Consider the following scenario. You use a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, or a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer to connect to a Web site. The Web site is hosted on Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6. The Web site requires a certificate. You download and install the certificate. You export the certificate. You successfully import the certificate on a Windows 2000-based computer, a Windows XP-based computer, or a Windows Server 2003-based computer. You try to use the computer on which you imported the certificate to connect to the Web site that is hosted on the server that is running IIS 6.

In this scenario, you may be unable to connect to the server that is running IIS 6 from the computer on which you imported the certificate. You may receive an error message that resembles one of the following:

This issue can occur if you did not select the Include all certificates in the certification path if possible option when you exported the certificate from the original client computer.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Certmgr.msc, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then right-click the certificate that you want to export, point to All Tasks, click Export.
3. Click Next.
4. On the Export Private Key page, click Yes, export the private key, and then click Next.
5. On the Export File Format page, click Personal Information Exchange - PKCS #12 (.PFX), click to select the Include all certificates in the certification path if possible check box, and then click Next.
   
   Note Do not click to select the Enable strong encryption (requires IE 5.0, NT 4.0 SP4 or above) check box.
6. Follow the directions on the screen to complete the Certificate Export Wizard.
7. On the client computer on which you want to import the certificate, click Start, click Run, type Certmgr.msc, and then click OK.
8. Expand the certificate store into which you want to import the certificate. Typically, you want to import the certificate into one of the following certificate stores:
   • Personal
   • Trusted Root Certification Authorities
   • Intermediate Certification Authorities
9. Right-click Certificates, point to All Tasks, and then click Import.
10. Follow the directions on the screen to complete the Certificate Import Wizard.
