Error message when a Web application that is hosted on a server that is running Internet Information Services 6.0 requests an ASP page: "HTTP 500 - Internal Server Error"

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. A Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based server is running Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0. A Web application that is hosted on this server has a Global.asa file that is 0 bytes. In this scenario, you receive the following error message when the Web application requests a Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP) page:
HTTP 500 - Internal Server Error
Additionally, an ASP error message that resembles the following is logged in the IIS log for the failed request:
GET time.asp |-|ASP(ap)_0147|500_Server_Error Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+MSIE+6.0;+Windows+NT+5.2;+SV1;+.NET+CLR+1.1.4322) 500 0 0

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following techniques:
  • Delete the empty Global.asa file.
  • Add script to the Global.asa file so that the file is not 0 bytes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
