Error message when you try to remove the System Center Operations Manager 2007 database role: "Error 1324. The folder path 'Microsoft SQL Server' contains an invalid character"

SYMPTOMS

You try to remove the Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 database role by using the Add or Remove Programs tool. However, you receive the following error message:
Error 1324. The folder path 'Microsoft SQL Server' contains an invalid character.

CAUSE

This issue occurs for one or more of the following causes.

Cause 1

The Microsoft SQL Server service is not started.

Cause 2

The password for the Microsoft SQL Server service has expired.

RESOLUTION

Resolution for Cause 1

  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  2. At the command prompt, type net start mssqlserver, and then press ENTER.
  3. Type exit, and then press ENTER to close the Command Prompt window.
  4. Try to remove the System Center Operations Manager 2007 database role by using the Add or Remove Programs tool.

Resolution for Cause 2

  1. Update the password for the Microsoft SQL Server service.
  2. Try to remove the System Center Operations Manager 2007 database role by using the Add or Remove Programs tool.
