FIX: Windows Media Player 11 cannot play some Windows Media content that was created by a Windows Media Format SDK-based application

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Windows Media Player 11 cannot play some Windows Media content that was created by a Windows Media Format SDK-based application, such as Microsoft Windows Media Encoder. You may experience one of the following playback issues:
  • No video is displayed.
  • The seek bar does not move as the video plays.
  • The video is slow to start after you move the seek bar.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Windows Media Encoder and similar Windows Media Format SDK-based applications can create a "phantom stream" in the ASF container. This is extra payload data that is not defined in the ASF header where there is no stream properties object for the stream. This behavior is by design. However, Windows Media Player 11 does not appropriately handle this uncommon scenario.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

To resolve this problem, obtain the hotfix from the Microsoft Download Center.

Note This hotfix does not have a native x64-based version for Windows XP x64 Edition because there is no native x64-based version of the Windows Media Format Runtime 11 series. The WindowsMedia11-KB946665-x64-INTL.exe package applies the 32-bit version of this hotfix to the 32-bit version of the Wmvcore.dll file on Windows XP x64 Edition.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Create a Windows Media Format SDK-based application that archives content.
  2. Use this application to stop an archive without stopping the encoding session.
  3. Change the output file name, and then restart the archive.
  4. Encode for approximately one hour.
  5. Embed Windows Media Player in a Web page, and then play the content that you created in step 4.
  6. Move the seek bar.

    After you move the seek bar, playback starts more slowly than expected.
