Performance is slow on a multiprocessor computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista
You encounter one of the following issues on a multiprocessor computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista:
Issue one Performance is slow if the number of processors is greater than 64.
Issue two Only half of the processors are started. For example, 12 processors are started on a computer that has 24 processors.
Cause of issue one Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista assume that the number of processors in the computer should not be greater than 64. If the number of processors is greater than 64, Windows turns off non-uniform memory access (NUMA) optimization and runs in symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) mode. Therefore, performance is slow.
Cause of issue two Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista assume one or more physical processors per NUMA node. However, this assumption may be incorrect because of recent processor innovations such as multichip modules. Therefore, Windows incorrectly calculates the number of processors.
Hotfix information A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Windows Server 2008 Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 Restart requirement You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
