Works: Values in Formatted Fields Treated as Text

SUMMARY

In a Works 4.0 or later Database, a time or date entered in a field that has not been formatted for a time or date will be treated as text.

For example, a date entered into a field formatted as a number is treated as text.

This does not apply to a field formatted as General. General-formatted fields take on the formatting of the first value entered into them. For example, if the first entry in a General-formatted field is a date, the field will be formatted as a date.

MORE INFORMATION

This does not apply to the Spreadsheet. For example, if you enter a date into a cell that has been formatted as Time, the cell will be reformatted to a Date format. Previous versions of Works for Windows used this reformatting in both the Spreadsheet and Database.

To determine if Works is treating a value as text, check if there is a quotation mark (") preceding the value in the formula bar. Text entries will have the quotation mark; numeric values will not. Text entries also have a left alignment, whereas numeric values are right aligned by default.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Works 6.0
  • Microsoft Works 2000 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Works 4.5 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Works 4.0 Standard Edition
