Plus! 98: Cannot Start Windows After You Run Disk Cleanup

SYMPTOMS

After you run the Disk Cleanup utility included in Plus! 98, you may be unable to start Microsoft Windows 98 or you may receive the following error message:
Error loading GDI.EXE. You must reinstall windows.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if you use the Non-Critical File Cleaner to delete one or more of the following files:

  • Vgaoem.fon
  • Vgasys.fon
  • Vga850.fon
These files are system fonts required to start Windows 98 in either Normal or Safe mode.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, extract the following files from their cabinet files on the original Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM to the folders listed in the table below.

   Vgasys.fon   Win98_43.CAB   C:\Windows\Fonts
   Vgaoem.fon   Win98_43.CAB   C:\Windows\Fonts
   Vga850.fon   Win98_43.CAB   C:\Windows\Fonts
