SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Office 2000 Setup program in Maintenance mode and click Remove Office, Setup removes the Inbox icon from the desktop.

CAUSE

Office uses the Windows Messaging client as the e-mail service and replaces the Inbox icon on the desktop with the Microsoft Outlook icon. When you remove the entire installation of Office this includes Outlook and all of its icons including the icon on the desktop.

RESOLUTION

If Setup has removed the Inbox icon from the desktop, you must reinstall the Windows Messaging client to restore the icon. To reinstall Windows Messaging, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. On the Windows Setup tab, click the Windows Messaging check box to clear it, and then click OK.
  3. When you are prompted, restart Windows.
  4. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  5. On the Windows Setup tab, click the Windows Messaging check box to select it, and then click OK.
  6. When you are prompted to restart Windows, do so.

MORE INFORMATION

When you run the Office Setup program in Maintenance mode, and you click Remove Office the Setup program removes all files installed by Office including those that are related to the Windows Messaging client. These files include the Inbox icon on the desktop.
