SYMPTOMS

The Add/Remove Hardware Wizard detects the Miro DC30 as a Windows Multimedia video controller. According to the driver manufacturer's Readme file, the DC30 does not use Microsoft Video for Windows and should not be recognized as a video device.

CAUSE

Although the adapter does not use Video for Windows for capture, it is enumerated as a Plug and Play device and uses the MMClass installer. It does not place entries in the registry or System.ini file ([drivers32] msvideo=) to identify it as a Video for Windows capture device, so Video for Windows-based programs are not aware of its presence.

RESOLUTION

Under these circumstances, the Miro DC30 is still operational. The adapter is just detected incorrectly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
