SYMPTOMS

When you attempt a stand-alone query using LDAP://, you may receive the following error message:
An error occurred while performing the search. Your computer, your Internet service provider, or the specified directory service may be disconnected. Check your connections and try again.

Operations Error
Also, there may not be any entries in the directory service that match your search criteria. You receive this error message if you entered a more specific LDAP string, such as either of these:
ldap://dc-one/CN=name,CN=Users,DC=example,DC=net
ldap://dc-one.example.net/CN=name,CN=Users,DC=example,DC=net

RESOLUTION

Click Start, point to Search, and then click For People to issue the LDAP query to the appropriate directory service and specify any additional items such as the server name, logon credentials, search base, and so on that may be required.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

For example, if you issue a query to the domain by typing LDAP://"DOMAIN.COM" in the Open box, the error message stated above occurs.

Issuing the same command from a Web browser generates the same error message.
