SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to change a sound for a Microsoft Works Calendar sound event, you may receive the following error message:
An error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file C:\Windows\System\Mmsys.cpl.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the path to the sound file that you want to associate with a Works Calendar event is greater than 64 characters in length.

NOTE: This behavior does not occur on Microsoft Windows 2000-based computers.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, reduce the length of the path to the sound file that you want to use. To do this, use one of the following methods.

Reduce the Length of Folder Names in the Path

To reduce the length of a folder name in the path to the sound file:
  1. Start Windows Explorer, or click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. Browse to the folder that contains the sound file that you want to use.
  3. Click the folder to select it.
  4. On the File menu, click Rename.
  5. Type a shorter name for the folder, and then press ENTER.
NOTE: You must change the path to the sound file in the Name box in the Sounds tool in Control Panel.

Copy the Sound File to Another Folder

To copy the sound file to another folder:
  1. Start Windows Explorer, or click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. Browse to the folder that contains the sound file that you want to use.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  4. Browse to the folder into which you want to copy the file.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
NOTE: You must change the path to the sound file in the Name box in the Sounds tool in Control Panel.
