Works 2000: CPU Usage Is at 100 Percent When You Use Word Processor

When you run Microsoft Works 2000 Word Processor, you may notice that CPU usage is at or near 100 percent.

This behavior can occur if the Background spell checking option in Works 2000 Word Processor is selected.

To prevent this issue from occurring, disable the Background spell checking option. To do this:

1. Start Works 2000 Word Processor.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. Click to clear the Background spell checking check box.
4. Click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Even if you run Works 2000 Word Processor with the Background spell checking option selected and CPU usage at 100 percent, neither the functionality of Works 2000 Word Processor nor that of any other program you may be running concurrently with Works 2000 Word Processor is affected in an adverse way.

If you switch to another program by clicking the program's taskbar button or by minimizing the Works 2000 Word Processor window, CPU usage returns to a normal level.

How to Check CPU Usage

To check CPU Usage, start System Monitor. To do this, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point System Tools, and then click System Monitor.

If you cannot find System Monitor in a branch of System Tools on the Accessories menu, install System Monitor from your Microsoft Windows CD-ROM. To do this:

1. Insert the Windows CD-ROM for your computer into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key when you insert the CD-ROM to prevent Windows Setup from starting automatically.
2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
4. Click the Windows Setup tab.
5. In the list of Components, click System Tools, and then click Details.
6. Click to select the System Monitor check box.
7. Click OK, and then click OK again.
8. Close Control Panel.
