SUMMARY

This article describes how to separate columns in a Works word processor document.

MORE INFORMATION

To align columns precisely, use the TAB key to separate columns.

To control the width of the columns in your document, customize your tab stops:

  1. On the Format menu, click Tabs.
  2. Under Alignment, click the text alignment you want to use for the new tab stop.
  3. Under Leader, click the type of text leader you want to use for the new tab stop.
  4. In the Tab stop position box, type the distance from the left margin where you want to place the new tab stop, and then click Set.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 to add more tab stops.

NOTE: If you make a mistake, click the tab stop you do not want in the Tab stops box, and then click Clear. To remove all tab stops, click Clear All.
  6. When you are finished adding tab stops, click OK.
If you attempt to use spaces instead of tabs to separate columns, you may experience the following problems:

  • If you use a variable-width font, you cannot use spaces to align columns precisely, because the characters in a variable-width font all have different widths.
  • When you use a fixed-width font, you can use spaces to align columns precisely. However, you cannot format any characters as bold or italic (including spaces), because bold and italic characters in a fixed-width font may be wider than normal characters.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Works 2000 Standard Edition
