SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade to Windows 2000 from Microsoft Windows 95/98, the names of the printers you use may change.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you use a friendly name for your printers in Windows 95/98. Windows 2000 uses the name of the printer that is on the print server.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

The name of network-based printers in Windows 2000 is supplied by the server that is sharing the printer on the network. Network printers cannot be renamed on a client computer. You can rename only locally installed printers.
