Article ID: 255161 - Last Review: February 25, 2007 - Revision: 4.3 WMI Returns a Generic Event Instead of a Specific Trap
This article was previously published under Q255161 SYMPTOMS
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) may return a generic Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) event instead of a specific event.
CAUSE
Some SNMP agents may place null values in SNMP variables for a trap, even though the value is out of range as defined for the variable in the SNMP Management Information Base (MIB). For example, the variable may support values from 1 to 255. This is a problem in the agent because it is populating the trap with invalid data. The correct behavior, if one or more properties contain valid data, is to ignore the agent errors and send the specific WMI event. If all of the properties in the trap contain invalid data, a generic event should be sent. Because of a problem in the provider, in some cases (even when some of the data is valid), a generic event is sent instead of the specific WMI event.
