Computer May Stop Responding with Object Auditing Enabled

SYMPTOMS

When object auditing is enabled, your Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer may stop responding (hang).

Customers have reported receiving a black screen, which seemed to indicate that the server experienced an access violation but in fact it just stopped responding. Some customers have reported that their computers restarted, but this is because third-party software was monitoring for hangs and restarted the server.

CAUSE

There is a problem with object auditing and locking in the kernel that can cause a deadlock. The only symptom of this issue is your computer hanging when auditing is enabled.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
