When you use Microsoft Windows 2000 Disk Management to upgrade a basic disk to dynamic, the disk conversion process may stop and you may receive the following error message:
[Disk Management] Cannot proceed with the upgrade. Unable to get information about an existing basic volume. CAUSE
When Disk Management attempts to convert a basic disk to dynamic, it checks for the following items:
If a partition is created outside of Windows 2000 Disk Management (for example, when you use the Microsoft Windows NT Windisk.exe program) and the system is not restarted, the volume manager is unaware of that volume and causes the disk conversion process to stop. RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, you can use either of the two following methods:
