"Proxy Chain Loop" Error Message Using Proxy Server and NLB

This article was previously published under Q269165

SYMPTOMS

After you install Network Load Balancing (NLB) with Proxy Server 2.0, you may receive the following error message in your browser:
Error 12206 proxy server has detected a proxy chain loop
You may also notice in Task Manager that the Inetinfo.exe process has high CPU usage.

CAUSE

The NLB virtual IP address is being used for intra-array communications. All array traffic is load balanced and may end up being routed back to the Proxy server from which it was sent.

RESOLUTION

Configure intra-array communications to take place over the dedicated IP address:
  1. In IIS Internet Services Manager, right-click Web Proxy, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Routing tab, and then click Advanced in the Routing Within Array section.
  3. Modify the Intra-Array Communications section to reflect the dedicated IP address of the Proxy server. You can type this information manually, or click Auto-Detect to see all the available IP addresses.
  4. Click OK, and then click OK.
