When you install Exchange 2000 into an existing Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 environment that is in a topology with multiple domains, and Active Directory sites, the following error is logged in the application event log:
Event Type: Error
If you restart the Exchange 2000 server, the Site Replication Service (SRS) does not start, and the following error is logged in the application event log:
Event Source: MSExchangeSA Event Category: General Event ID: 9152 Date: 10/2/2000 Time: 11:17:32 AM User: N/A Computer: TBill1 Description: Microsoft Exchange System Attendant reported an error '0x80044501' in its DS Monitoring thread.
Event Type: Warning Event Source: MSExchangeSRS Event Category: Service Control Event ID: 1403 Date: 10/2/2000 Time: 2:07:54 PM User: N/A Computer: TBill1 Description: Site replication service was unable to obtain legacy account details and cannot continue. CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you install another Exchange 2000 server in a different Active Directory site before replication occurs. After the installation of the second Exchange 2000 server, the directory replication cycle overwrites the msExchEncryptedPassword attribute. When the SRS runs again, it attempts to read the attribute, but is unable to locate it.
