Article ID: 289583 - Last Review: February 21, 2007 - Revision: 3.3 DHCP Server Does Not Update the A Record on the DNS Server If Option 81 Is Received with the S Bit SetThis article was previously published under Q289583 SYMPTOMS
DHCP option 81 (option code 0x51, or decimal 81) which is named FQDN (fully qualified domain name) allows a client to request that the DHCP server perform DNS name registration on behalf of the client. If a Windows 2000-based DHCP server is configured to use the Update DNS only if DHCP client requests option and is not configured to register earlier (down-level) clients, and this option is sent to the Microsoft DHCP server with the S bit set (with the flags set to 1), the DHCP server registers the PTR record but does not register the A record on behalf of the client.
CAUSE
This issue occurs because the DHCP server does not handle the condition in which the client sends the S bit set.
