This article describes how to add programs and Windows
components to your Windows 2000-based computer.
The Add/Remove
Programs tool helps you to manage programs on your computer. This tool enables
you to add a new program, or to change or remove an existing program.
Also, you can use the Add/Remove Programs tool to add the Windows 2000
components that you did not select when you performed the original installation
of Windows 2000, for example, networking options or Indexing Service
files.
To Install Windows Components
- Log on to the computer as an administrator.Note: You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the
Administrators group to complete this procedure.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click Add/Remove Windows Components. The Windows Components Wizard starts and the Windows Components
screen is displayed.
The components that are available are:
- Accessories and Utilities
- Certificate Services
- Indexing Service
- Internet Information Services (IIS)
- Management and Monitoring Tools
- Message Queuing Services
- Networking Services
- Other Network File and Print Services
- Remote Installation Services
- Remote Storage
- Script Debugger
- Terminal Services
- Terminal Services Licensing
- Windows Media Services
- You can either click to select or click to clear each check
box, which can either add or remove a component.
NOTE: A shaded box means that only part of the component can be
installed. - To observe what is included in a component, click the
component, and then click Details.
NOTE: If the Details button is unavailable, the component does not have any
subcomponents associated with it. - Follow the instructions in the Windows Components
Wizard.
NOTE: Certain Windows components require configuration before they can
be used. If you installed one or more of these components, but did not
configure them, when you click
Add/Remove Windows Components, a list of components that need to be configured is displayed. To
configure a component, click
Configure, and then follow the instructions on the screen. To add a new
component, click
Components, and then follow the instructions in the Windows Components
Wizard.
An Example of How to Install the DHCP Service
- Log on to the computer as an administrator.
- Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.
- In the Windows Component Wizard, in the Components list, click Networking Services, and then click Details.
- In the Networking Services dialog box, click to select the Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP) check box if it is not already selected,
and then click OK.
- In the Windows Components Wizard, click Next. The Windows Components Wizard displays the Configuring
Components screen with a status bar that displays the progress of the
configuration.
Insert the Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000
Advanced Server CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
Setup copies the DHCP server and tool files to your computer. - When Setup is complete, the Completing the Windows
Components Wizard screen is displayed.
- Click Finish to close the wizard.
To Install a Program
To install a program from a CD-ROM or floppy disk:
- Log on to the computer as an administrator.
- Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click Add New Programs.
- Click CD or Floppy. Either the Install Program From Floppy Disk or the CD-ROM wizard
prompts you to insert the first installation floppy disk or CD-ROM of the
product.
- Insert the disk or CD-ROM, and then click Next. When Setup starts, follow the prompts.
- When Setup is complete, click Close to close the Add/Remove Programs window.
NOTE: When you use the Add/Remove Programs tool, you can install only
programs that are written for Windows operating systems.
To Install a Program from a Network
- Log on to the computer as an administrator.
- Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click Add New Programs.
NOTE: If your computer is connected to a network, the programs that
you are authorized to add are displayed at the bottom of the screen. If your
network administrator has organized programs into categories, you may need to
select a different option in Category to locate the program that you want to add. - Select the program that you want to add, and then click Add. When Setup starts, follow the prompts.
- When Setup is complete, click Close to close the Add/Remove Programs window.
NOTE: When you start a program, or attempt to perform a task in a
program, you may observe a dialog box that indicates that the program is being
installed or updated by Windows Installer. This behavior can occur if your
administrator has set up the program to install in this manner, if program
files have been deleted or corrupted, or if you are attempting to use a program
feature that had not been installed during Setup. If the program had been
installed from a CD-ROM, or if you are no longer connected to the network,
Windows Installer may prompt you to insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
When Windows Installer finishes, the program or feature that you are attempting
to use starts.
