SUMMARY

This article describes how to configure IP address reservations for Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) clients.

When you configure a DHCP reservation, you need a MAC address, but remote access clients (such as PPTP) do not have a MAC address. Because of this, traditional DHCP reservations do not work. You can manually assign an IP address that is based upon a domain account instead of a MAC address, although the user has to be a member of a Native mode domain.

Requirements

The Windows 2000 server used for this procedure must be running in native mode. If your server computer is running in mixed mode, the IP address box in the User Properties dialog box will be disabled.

WARNING: If you change your domain to Native mode, you cannot change it back. You can convert a domain to Native mode when it contains only Windows 2000 Server-based domain controllers. If you still have Microsoft Windows NT-based backup domain controllers, you should not switch to Native mode. To change modes, in Active Directory Domains and Trusts, right-click the domain you want to change, and then click Properties. You can now change modes.

Configure IP Reservations for RRAS

  1. In Active Directory Users and Computers, view the users.
  2. Right-click the user you want to assign a static IP address, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Dial-in tab, assign a static IP address.
