FP2000: Error Message When You Publish to a Web: Server Error: Cannot Rename <File Name>

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to publish a Web to a server, you may receive an error message similar to the following
Server error: Cannot rename file name
where file name is the name of a file in the Web that you are attempting to publish.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • The Web site has been configured with Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions.

    -and-
  • The Web site has been tuned for performance.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to the server computer as Administrator.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

    Registry Editor starts.WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  4. In Registry Editor, expand the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions
  5. Under the Web Server Extensions subkey, click All Ports.
  6. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
  7. In the Export Registry File dialog box, type All Ports in the File name box, and then click Save.
  8. In the right pane of the Registry Editor window, click CacheMaxDocMeta.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Delete. The following message appears:
    Are you sure you want to delete this value?
    Click Yes.
  10. Follow the procedure in steps 8 and 9 to also delete the following registry values:
    CacheMaxImage
    TextMemory
    CacheMaxIncludeSize
  11. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
  12. Restart the computer.
