This step-by-step article describes how to install the Active Directory administrative tools to a Windows 2000 Professional-based computer. With Windows 2000 Administration Tools (included on the Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Advanced Server CD-ROMs), you can manage a server remotely from any computer that is running Windows 2000. Windows 2000 Administration Tools contain Microsoft Management Console snap-ins, Active Directory administrative tools, and other tools that are used to manage computers that are running Windows 2000 Server, and which are not provided with Windows 2000 Professional.
Install the Windows 2000 Administration ToolsAfter you install the Windows 2000 Administrative Tools, you can also remotely run administrative tasks on Active Directory by using the Active Directory administrative tools from a computer that is not a domain controller (DC). The Active Directory administrative tools can only be used from a computer with access to a Windows 2000 domain.NOTE: You must have administrative permissions for the local computer to install and run Windows 2000 Administration Tools, and you must have Domain administrative permissions for the domain that you want to run administrative tasks on to remotely manage a server.
