You receive the “Close open programs” error message when you try to install Works Suite 2005

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Works Suite 2005, you may receive the following error message:

Close open programs

Setup has found the following programs running on your computer. These programs need to be closed before setup can continue.

Setup can close these programs for you automatically.

To close the programs listed below, save your work and then click Close All Programs.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you are running one or more programs on your computer that can interfere with the installation of Works Suite 2005.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow the instructions in the error message. Save your work, and then quit the programs that are listed in the error message. Click Close All Programs. The Works Suite 2005 Setup program will try to quit the programs automatically.

If the Works Suite 2005 Setup program cannot quit some of the programs that are listed in the error message, follow these steps:

Note the name of each program that is listed in the "Close open programs" error message.
Right-click the task bar, and then click Task Manager.
Click the Processes tab.
Locate the name of the program that you want to quit.
Click the program name, and then click End Task.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each program.
Close the Task Manager, and then try to run the Works Suite 2005 Setup program.
