SYMPTOMS

The backup utility does not detect the log files on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003. Additionally, when you try to perform a restore of the Ntds.dit database, the restore is unsuccessful. This problem occurs when the Ntds.dit database and log files reside on different drives.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows Server 2003. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you have to know where the log files reside so that you can specifically select them when you use the backup utility. Then, you can restore the files when you do the restore operation.
