Error message when you try to install Windows Server Update Services: "A program ran as part of the setup did not finish"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), the installation is unsuccessful. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
A program ran as part of the setup did not finish
Note This error message contains a grammatical error. The message should state, "A program that ran as part of the setup did not finish."

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • A previous attempt to install WSUS was unsuccessful.
  • The metabase backup file from this installation attempt remains on the hard disk.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, search the hard disk for any files that have the following name:
SUS20Metabasebackup.*
Rename these files, and then run WSUS Setup again.
