SYMPTOMS

When a user tries to send an e-mail message through a connector in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, the user receives a non-delivery report (NDR). This NDR contains the following message:
You do not have permission to send to this recipient.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • Delivery restrictions have been set on a connector in Exchange Server 2003.
  • The affected user belongs to a group that has been authorized to use the connector.
  • The distinguished name (DN) of the affected user contains one or more of the following characters:
    • An asterisk (*)
    • An opening parenthesis (()
    • A closing parenthesis ())
    • A backslash (\)

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

Because of file dependencies, this hotfix requires Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2.

Restart requirement

You must stop the Wmiprvse.exe process to apply this hotfix. To do this, stop the Windows Management Instrumentation service, and then configure its Startup type to "Disabled."

After the hotfix is applied successfully, reset the Windows Management Instrumentation service Startup type to "Automatic." Then, restart the service.
