SUMMARY

When you try to connect to the SoftGrid Management Web Service from the SoftGrid Management Console, the operation is not successful. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
Unable to contact the SoftGrid System.
An unexpected communication error has occurred. Please report the following error code to your system administrator.
Error code: 0000C809

CAUSE

This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:
  • The port that is specified is invalid.
  • The SoftGrid Management Console system is configured to use a proxy server.
  • The Use Secure Connection option is configured incorrectly.
  • The Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) DefaultAppPool application pool is stopped.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for your situation.

Method 1: Specify a valid port

In the Connect to SoftGrid System or Configure Connection dialog box in SoftGrid Management Console, make sure that the port that is specified in the Port field is a port on which the Web server is listening.

To specify a valid port, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click SoftGrid Management Console.
  2. Expand SoftGrid Systems.
  3. Right-click SoftGrid Systems, and then click Connect to SoftGrid System. Alternatively, right-click SERVERNAME, and then click Configure Connection.
  4. In the Port box, type the TCP port, and then click OK.
To verify the TCP port on which the Web server is listening, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Expand Internet Information Services, expand COMPUTERNAME, and then expand Web Sites.
  3. Right-click Default Web Site, and then click Properties.
  4. Note the TCP port in the TCP port box.
  5. For advanced Web server configuration with multiple IP addresses, click Advanced, and then note the IP address and the TCP port.

Method 2: Configure the SoftGrid Management Console system not to use a proxy server

The SoftGrid Management Console may by unable to log on if authentication is tried through a firewall by using a proxy server. However, the SoftGrid Management Console can log on if one of the following conditions is true:
  • Authentication is tried over a Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) connection.
  • Authentication for the SoftGridManagement Virtual Directory includes Basic authentication.
To enable Basic authentication for the SoftGridManagement Virtual Directory, follow these steps:
  1. In the SoftGrid Management Web Service server, start Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Expand SERVERNAME, expand Web Sites, and then expand Default Web Site.
  3. Right-click SoftGridManagement, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Directory Security tab.
  5. Under Authentication and access control, click Edit.
  6. Click to select the Basic authentication (password is sent in clear text) check box.
  7. Click Yes, and then click OK two times.
Repeat these steps for the SoftGridReporting Virtual Directory.

Method 3: Configure the "Use Secure Connection" option correctly

In the Connect to SoftGrid System or Configure Connection dialog box in SoftGrid Management Console, make sure that the Use Secure Connection check box is selected.

Additionally, make sure that the Require secure channel (SSL) check box in SoftGridManagement IIS Virtual Directory is selected.

To verify that the Require secure channel (SSL) check box is selected, follow these steps:
  1. In the SoftGrid Management Web Service server, start Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Expand SERVERNAME, expand Web Sites, and then expand Default Web Site.
  3. Right-click SoftGridManagement, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Directory Security tab.
  5. Under Secure communications, click Edit.
  6. Make sure that the Require secure channel (SSL) check box is selected.

Method 4: Start the IIS DefaultAppPool application pool

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In the SoftGrid Management Web Service server, start Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Expand Internet Information Services, expand SERVERNAME, expand Application Pools, and then expand DefaultAppPool.
  3. Right-click DefaultAppPool, and then click Start.
