INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Oobmig.exe tool. After you install Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack (SP2), the system does not trust binaries that are installed by out-of-band updates. The Oobmig.exe tool restores trust to these out-of-band updates.

Note An out-of-band update is an update that Microsoft makes available outside the regular product shipment cycle.

MORE INFORMATION

Restore process

To restore trust to a particular out-of-band update, the Oobmig.exe tool performs the following steps:
  1. The tool checks the following Uninstall directory in the service pack for the catalog file that corresponds to the out-of-band update:
    %windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$
  2. The tool copies the catalog file into the following directory:
    %windir%\system32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
  3. The tool automatically restarts the Cryptographic Services (CryptSvc) service so that the system registers the catalog.

Command-line switches

Oobmig.exe is a command-line tool. You can use command-line switches to control the behavior of this tool.

The /? switch

To see the following syntax information, type Oobmig.exe /? at a command prompt:
Usage: oobmig.exe /?, or
       oobmig.exe /default, or
       oobmig.exe /kb [######]

The /default switch

The Oobmig.exe tool can restore trust to out-of-band updates against a default list of updates. To use the default list, type Oobmig.exe /default at a command prompt. This default list includes the following out-of-band updates:

You can also restore trust to a specific out-of-band update by specifying an update number. To do this, run the following command at a command prompt:
oobmig.exe /kb <xxxxxx>
Note The <xxxxxx> placeholder represents a six-digit number for the out-of-band update that you specify.

If you changed the default location of the $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder when you installed the service pack, you will receive the following error when you run the Oobmig.exe tool:
Error, path C:\Windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$ does not exist
To work around this issue, create the following folder structure:
%Windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$
Then, copy the following files to the %Windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$ folder. You can copy these files from the location that you specified for the uninstall directory when you installed the service pack.

  • KB919458.cat
  • KB925876.cat
  • KB926139.cat

After you do this, you can successfully run the Oobmig.exe tool.
