You cannot send Start TLS requests from a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP or Windows Vista to a server that is running OpenLDAP SoftwareArticle ID: 959873 - View products that this article applies to. Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. When you send Start TLS requests from the
computer to a server that is running OpenLDAP Software, and the connection uses
the 389 port, you receive an error message. For example, when you use the
LDP.exe tool to send Start TLS requests to a server that is running OpenLDAP
Software, you receive the following error message: ldap_start_tls_s(ld, &retValue, result, SvrCtrls,
ClntCtrls) Error " "0x1>:ldap_start_tls_s() failed: Operations Error Server Returned: 0x0: Success Server error: <empty> Note The problem only occurs when you connect to a server that is running OpenLDAP Software. The problem does not occur when you connect from a Windows Server 2003-based server to a Windows domain controller. CAUSELightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) clients that
are running Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP Professional x64 Edition require
that the LDAP servers respond to the responsename field, based on Request for Comments (RFC) 2830. However,
OpenLDAP Software follows RFC 4510, RFC 4511, and RFC 4513 in which the responsename field is not required. Therefore, you cannot send Start TLS
requests because OpenLDAP Software does not respond to this
field. RESOLUTIONHotfix for Windows Server 2003A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Customer Support Services to obtain the hotfix.
