System Center Essentials 2007 Service Pack 1 cannot monitor network devices that report an interface speed greater than 2,147,483,647 Gbps (2 GB per second)

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft System Center Essentials 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) does not monitor network devices that report an interface speed that is greater than 2,147,483,647 Gbps (2 GB per second).

If you are experiencing this issue, you will encounter the following symptoms:

Network devices do not report interface information, and network interfaces are not shown in the diagram view.

The Operations Manager event log contains the following event:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: HealthService
Event Category: Health Service 
Event ID: 4000
Date: <date>
Time: <time>
User: N/A
Computer: <Essentials Server>
Description:
A monitoring host is unresponsive or has crashed. The status code for the host failure was 2164195371.

Note Event ID 4000 is a generic event that is reported when the monitoring host is unresponsive or has crashed. You must be experiencing both symptoms for this hotfix to be applicable.

In System Center Essentials 2007, you may notice that network interface usage is not available for some network interfaces. Specifically, the network interfaces that are listed in the Instance name line of the following event in the Operations Manager event log do not have usage information. This issue occurs on fast network interfaces that have high usage:

CAUSE

When a network device reports an interface speed that is greater than 2GB per second, the MonitoringHost.exe process exits unexpectedly.

File Information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Install the updated version of the System Center Network Device Monitoring Library.

You cannot upgrade the existing Microsoft System Center Network Device Monitoring Library management pack to this updated version.

To apply this hotfix, delete the existing Microsoft System Center Network Device Monitoring Library management pack, and then import the updated Microsoft System Center Network Device Monitoring Library management pack.

You will receive the following error when you import the updated Management Pack if you have not deleted the existing version of the Management Pack:

The requested management pack was invalid. See inner exception for details.
Parameter name: managementPack ManagementPack Version [6.0.1885.4] is not upgrade compatible with older version [6.0.1885.0]. Compatibility check failed with 1 errors:

To resolve this error, delete the existing Network Device Monitoring Library Management Pack before you import the updated version.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:

Upgrade the firmware on a network device. Do this only if the network device incorrectly reports an interface speed greater than 2 GB per second.
Exclude the network device from management.

MORE INFORMATION

After you apply this hotfix, System Center Essentials 2007 will report the interface speed as 4 GB per second if the network device has an interface speed that is greater than 4 GB per second. This is expected behavior. In other scenarios, System Center Essentials 2007 reports the actual interface speed.

To delete the existing Management Pack, follow these steps:

Open the System Center Essentials 2007 Console.
Browse to the Administration Space.
Click the Management Packs node.
Scroll down, and then select the Network Device Monitoring Library Management Pack.
In the Actions pane, click Delete.
