After you use a smart card to log on to a computer that is running Windows XP, Digest authentication fails
Article ID: 973624 - View products that this article applies to.
You use a smart card to log on to a computer that is running Windows XP and that has Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8 installed. In this scenario, when you use Internet Explorer to access a Web site that requires Digest authentication, the authentication fails and you receive an authentication required message.
Note This problem does not occur on computers that are running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
This issue occurs because the Wdigest.dll component does not add a logon session to the list of logon sessions if the password field is blank. This behavior occurs when you use a smart card to log on to the computer. However, the smart card logon session is not added to the list of logon sessions. When Digest authentication is required, the Wdigest.dll component searches for the logon session in the logon session list. However, because the smart card logon session is not added to the list, Digest authentication fails.
