SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • On a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, an application or service performs DNS resolution against a host name.
  • The host name is a numeric string that is composed completely of digits.
In this scenario, the DNS resolution fails. For example, you run a "PING 49721400465555" command to issue a PING packet to a host that is named 49721400465555. Then, you receive the following error message:
Ping request could not find host 49721400465555. Please check the name and try again.

CAUSE

The original definition host name validity in RFC 952 did not allow the first character of a host name to be a digit. This restriction was updated in RFC 1123 so that the first character of a host name could be a digit. However, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 use the original RFC 952 definition. Therefore, they cannot resolve completely numeric host names.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the “Hotfix Request” page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Windows Vista file information note
