Consider the following scenario. In the main window in Microsoft Windows Live OneCare, a red status message appears that indicates that Windows Live OneCare is out of date. You click Update Now to update the program. In this scenario, you receive the following error message:

Method 1: Verify that the Internet connection is working
To verify that the Internet connection is working, follow these steps:
Connect the computer that is running Windows Live OneCare to the Internet. Then, use a Web browser to log on to an Internet-based Web site. If you can log on to the Web site, the Internet connection is working.

Method 2: Remove third-party firewall, dial-up, or download accelerator applications
To remove third-party firewall , dial-up, or download accelerator applications, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
In the Currently installed programs list, look for any third-party firewall programs that are installed on the computer, and then remove these programs.
Method 6: Start Windows XP in Selective Startup mode
To start Windows XP in Selective Startup mode, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and the click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click to clear all services check boxes.
Click OK, and then click Restart to restart the computer.
Try to update Windows Live OneCare.
Note If you still experience this issue, it may be caused by a third-party program or service that conflicts with Windows Live OneCare. In this case, disable the services and startup items that are mentioned in step 3 one at a time until you determine which service is causing the problem.
If the previous steps in this method do not resolve the issue, revert to Normal mode. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Normal Startup-load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.
