Error message when you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 3: "You do not have enough free disk space on %SystemDrive% to install Service Pack 3"

When you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), you receive the following error message:When you examine the Windows update log file, you may see an entry that contains the following error code:When you examine the service pack log file, you may see an entry that contains the following status message:Notes

• The %SystemDrive% environment variable that is included in the error message indicates the drive on which Windows is installed. Typically this is drive C.
• Typically, the Windows update log file resides in the following location:
  C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
• Typically, the service pack log file resides in the following location:
  C:Windows\Svcpack.log

This issue occurs if the free space on the drive where Windows is installed is insufficient for installation of the service pack.

To resolve this issue, free some disk space by deleting unnecessary files. The minimum disk space that you must free is specified in the error message. You can use the Disk Cleanup tool to help free space on the hard disk by searching the disk for files that you can safely delete. You can then decide to delete some of or all the specified files.

Use one of the following methods to start the Disk Cleanup tool:

• Click Start, click Run, type cleanmgr in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
• Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
• In Windows Explorer or in My Computer, right-click the drive on which you want to free disk space, and then click Properties. Click the General tab, and then click Disk Cleanup.
