FIX: The Lsass.exe process may use a high percentage of CPU resources when you run Message Queuing on a domain controller with global catalog

Consider the following scenario. You are running Microsoft Message Queuing (also known as MSMQ) on a local Windows Server 2003-based domain controller with global catalog (GC). Too many messages are sent to a public queue of Message Queuing. In this scenario, the Lsass.exe process may use a high percentage of CPU resources.

Note This problem may also occur when Message Queuing is running on a local Microsoft Windows 2000-based domain controller.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

You must have Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed to apply this hotfix.

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Use fewer Message Queuing calls that involve the domain controller together with the GC.

Method 2

Use private queues or direct format names to bypass the lookup to the domain controller together with the GC.
