FIX: Error message when you have a solution that has an ordered test in Visual Studio 2005 IDE, and then you close and reopen the IDE: "Non-runnable Error"

Consider the following scenario:

• You have a solution that contains several test projects in Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Testers.
• One of the projects contains an ordered test that contains tests from the other projects in the solution.
• You run the ordered test in the Visual Studio 2005 IDE.
• You close the Visual Studio 2005 IDE, and then reopen the solution in the Visual Studio 2005 IDE.

In this scenario, you may experience the following problems:

• The ordered test may become invalid, and you may receive the following error message:
  Non-runnable Error: cannot find the test 'test_name' with storage 'bin\debug\project_name.dll'
• The ordered test may have a red line through it.
• One or more of the manual tests that have the .mht extension in the ordered test may be dimmed.
• Tests in the ordered test may be associated with the wrong projects.

Note A "Non-runnable Error" error usually occurs in manual tests that have the .mht extension. However, this error may also occur in other kinds of tests.

These problems occur because of a defect in the design of the ordered test.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Visual Studio 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

To work around these problems, follow these steps:

1. In the order test, remove the tests that are from the other projects in the solution.
2. Add the tests back to the ordered test.
3. Close the Visual Studio 2005 IDE, and then reopen the solution in the Visual Studio 2005 IDE.
