SYMPTOMS

In a Windows Server 2003-based cluster, the Resource Monitor process may crash when the following conditions are true:
  • Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2003 with Hotfix 921181 (included in SP2) is installed
  • Veritas Volume Manager is installed
Additionally, the following information is logged in the Cluster log:
00000704.00001d48::Date-Time ERR [RM] Exception. Code = 0xc0000005, Address = Address
00000704.00001d48::Date-Time ERR [RM] Exception parameters: 1, d1e2ae8, 1003f, 0
00000704.00001d48::Date-Time INFO [RM] GenerateMemoryDump: Start memory dump to file C:\WINDOWS\Cluster\resrcmon.dmp
Then, the cluster resources that run in the Resource Monitor process are automatically restarted.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Resource Monitor does not serialize calls that are made to a cluster resource. When the Resource Monitor schedules multiple requests at the same time to the Symantec Resource DLL (Vxres.dll), the Symantec Resource DLL may allocate a buffer space that is too small. Therefore, the Resource Monitor process crashes.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, contact Symantec for a resolution.
