On This PageSYMPTOMSOn a Windows Server 2003-based computer, registry-based policy settings may be unexpectedly removed. This problem occurs after a user logs on to the computer. Or, the problem occurs when the policy settings are reapplied. In addition, the following events are logged in the Application event log: Event Type: Error

CAUSEThere is an open handle on the Ntuser.pol file when the registry-based policy settings are applied. In this case, the computer cannot parse the Ntuser.pol file. Therefore, the computer deletes the registry keys that are related to the policy settings. RESOLUTIONAfter you apply this hotfix, Windows Server 2003 does not delete the corresponding registry keys when the computer cannot parse the Ntuser.pol file because of an open handle. Hotfix informationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article.
