SYMPTOMS

When you attach two IDE ATA/ATAPI devices as master and subordinate IDE devices on a Windows XP-based computer, the following event may be logged in the System event log:

Event ID: 26
Source: Atapi
Type: Warning
Description: The driver has detected that device \device\IDEport0 has old or out-of-date firmware. Reduced performance may result.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Enable Operation command of Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) is not sent to the correct device. This command is always sent to the master device for each device.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Service Pack 3 installed on the computer.

To use this hotfix, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.
