SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • On a Windows Server 2003-based computer, an application calls the TranslateName function to convert a directory service object name from one format to another.
  • You use the following format to enter a user name as a parameter for the TranslateName function:
    domain_name/user_name
    Note The domain_name/user_name format is incorrect. The correct format is domain_name\user_name. (You must use a backward slash instead of a forward slash.)
In this scenario, a stack overflow issue occurs in the TranslateName function.

This stack overflow issue occurs in any application or service that calls the TranslateName function. For example, the SQL Server 2005 Analysis service throws an exception because of this stack overflow issue.

CAUSE

The TranslateName function cannot handle the incorrect name format. This behavior causes an infinite recursion.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Technical support for x64-based versions of Microsoft Windows
