SYMPTOMS

When you heavily use the Server Message Block (SMB) redirector component (Mrxsmb.sys) on a Windows XP-based computer, you may encounter a Stop error.

This problem may occur more frequently in a virtualized system.

Additionally, assume that you enable the "Special pool" feature by following the steps in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
188831 How to use the special pool feature to isolate pool damage
In this scenario, the system generates a "0x000000D5" Stop error. This error indicates that a driver tried to write to the freed special pool memory.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Mrxsmb.sys driver does not correctly synchronize the reallocation of some pool memory under high-stress conditions. This behavior may cause the Mrxsmb.sys driver to write to the freed pool memory. Additionally, this behavior corrupts the pool memory that is being used by other drivers. You can enable the "Special pool" feature to verify that the Mrxsmb.sys driver is responsible for corrupting the memory.
