SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. When you install a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 failover cluster, you specify a SQL Server resource group. The name of the SQL Server resource group contains a trailing space. After the installation, you add a node to the SQL Server 2005 failover cluster. On the Service Account page of the SQL Server 2005 Setup Wizard, you provide the correct account information. In this scenario, you receive the following error message when you click Next:
SQL Server Setup could not validate the service accounts. Either the service accounts have not been provided for all of the services being installed, or the specified username or password is incorrect. For each service, specify a valid username, password, and domain, or specify a built-in system account.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, delete the trailing space in the name of the SQL Server resource group.

If you are using Windows Server 2008, follow these steps:
  1. In Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Failover Cluster Management.
  2. In Failover Cluster Management, expand Services and Applications, right-click the SQL Server resource group of the failover cluster, and then click Rename.
  3. Delete the trailing space in the name.
If you are using Windows Server 2003, follow these steps:
  1. In Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Cluster Administrator.
  2. In Cluster Administrator, expand Groups, right-click the SQL Server resource group of the failover cluster, and then click Rename.
  3. Delete the trailing space in the name.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
