SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You try to profile a Microsoft Visual C++ application. The Visual C++ application is a native non-static library. To do this, you use the instrumentation method in Microsoft Visual Studio Team Suite 2005. In this scenario, you may receive the following error message:
Error VSP1386 : X buffer(s) lost in association with process "process_id"
Additionally, the Visual Studio integrated development environment (IDE) may crash.

Notes
  • This problem occurs if you profile the application by using the IDE or at a command prompt.
  • If you profile the same library by using the sampling method, this problem does not occur.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the library contains an import table that has some NULL values. If the profiler retrieves a NULL value from the import table, the profiler crashes when it dereferences the pointer because the profiler expects a valid pointer.
