The Lsass.exe process crashes on Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain controllers

SYMPTOMS

Assume that you type an invalid IPv6 subnet mask in the Active Directory Sites and Services snap-in on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain controller. In this situation, the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (Lsass.exe) process crashes.

After some time, the invalid IPv6 subnet mask is replicated to all domain controllers in the environment. Therefore, the Lsass.exe process on all domain controllers crashes. When this issue occurs, the domain controllers restart repeatedly.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of an access violation in the Lsass.exe process when the subnet information is updated by the Net Logon service.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Additionally, the Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) role must be installed on the computer.
