Pressing Windows Logo Key Causes Hang with Windows Journal Hook

If you start a program that installs a Windows Journal hook (WH_JOURNALRECORD) with a call to SetWindowsHookEx, and you then press the Windows Logo key, the computer may stop responding (hang) and may generate an error in Kernel32.
This behavior is caused by a problem in User.exe. When you press the Windows Logo key, User.exe cancels journaling, which results in an internal variable being set to null. The problem is that User.exe immediately attempts to dereference this same variable after it has been set to null.
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
