INF: Running OLAP Services on a Domain Controller

This article contains information about the Microsoft SQL Server OLAP Services 7.0 and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services installation limitations on a Microsoft Windows 2000- or Microsoft Windows NT-based domain controller.

SQL Server Books Online incorrectly states that OLAP Services 7.0 and Analysis Services are not supported on a domain controller. This configuration is supported by Microsoft Product Support Services.

You can successfully use and install OLAP Services 7.0 and Analysis Services on a domain controller, but there are some limitations to the security model. Microsoft does not recommend this configuration.

Warnings

• The OLAP Administrators security group is created as a global group, not a local group.
  
  This might be a potential security issue if users are not restricted. For more information about the global group and the local group, search Windows 2000 Help.
• Microsoft recommends that you do not run memory-intensive applications from a domain controller. Depending on the size of your cubes, online analytical processing (OLAP) uses a lot of system memory and therefore takes resources from the computer's primary function as a domain controller. This might adversely affect the whole domain.
