SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 2002, when you change the formatting of a paragraph and then attempt to reapply the style previously used to the paragraph, Word reapplies the style to the selection. Word does not display the Modify Style dialog box. This functionality is different from earlier versions of Word.

RESOLUTION

To modify the style, use either of the following methods:

Method 1: Modify the Style

  1. Display the Styles and Formatting task pane if it isn't already displayed. To do this, click Styles and Formatting on the Format menu.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow next to the style name and then click Modify.
  3. Make the changes you want.

Method 2: Update the Style

  1. Display the Styles and Formatting task pane if it isn't already displayed. To do this, click Styles and Formatting on the Format menu.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow next to the style name and then click Update to Match Selection.
  3. Make the changes you want.
